The Other Boleyn Girl | Film Review

Long Live the Queen

Justin Chadwick’s adaptation of Phillipa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl is remarkably beautiful. The sets are spot on for the period, the costumes regal and breathtaking. Not a single member of the cast reminds us of a bad weekend at the renaissance fair. This is a consummate period drama, retelling the story of Anne Boleyn from a more familial perspective, but it still falls flat.

Agent Horrigan Would Be Proud

Let’s get something straight before we start digging into Vantage Point, the directorial debut of Pete Travis: it is a story told from eight different points of view. It says so in every trailer and on every poster, so when the film flashes back to the beginning and you see Dennis Quaid again, don’t get frustrated or make bad Groundhog Day jokes. That out of the way, let’s talk about this interesting take on the “terrorists attack an anti-terror summit” yarn.

Slipstream | DVD Review

We’ve Lost the Plot
By
Cheryl Kobs

Take a trip into the mind of a screenwriter. All of the jumbled influences of your day thrown together to form a thousand characters in a thousand scenarios. Sir Anthony Hopkins’ Slipstream gives the perfect insight in to the creation and execution of a movie.

Marjane Satrapi was but a young girl when revolutionaries in Iran overthrew the Shah and began a period of unrest still felt in the nation today. Persepolis is Ms. Satrapi’s personal story, first presented to the world as a graphic novel, and now as an Academy Award nominated film. The film is now making its way to suburban theaters thanks to the awards buzz, but may struggle to find an audience despite that.

The Official Death of HD-DVD

Toshiba held a press conference on Tuesday Night and officially announced to all that they would no longer be manufactoring, marketing or developing any HD-DVD players or recorders. The good news for anyone who supported the format before its death is that Toshiba will still provide full support and after-sales services to you. It's like getting a really crappy parting gift from a game show after you lost $25,000 dollars and have to go back home.

HD-DVD Dead Already? | NEWS

In a move that I saw coming a long time ago, Toshiba and the backers of the HD-DVD format are beginning to tug at their ties, a la Rodney Dangerfield. It would appear that the high definition format is starting to falter clumsily toward its demise.

Samuel L. Jackson and Hayden Christiensen face off in a classic battle of good Vs. Evil with all the acting prowess of an 8th grade drama club. No, I’m not bringing up the last Star Wars movie again, this time they star in a new film called Jumper.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull | Trailer Park

Do you know how much it hurts to type "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"? About as much as saying "Attack of the Clones"...

Here's hoping that my inner child isn't in for another karmic ass raping from Mr. Lucas...

Flogging Molly - Float | Music Review

New Flogging Molly Doesn’t Sink the Boat

Describing the band Flogging Molly to the uninitiated is difficult. They have defied clear genre classification since they released their debut album, Swagger, in 2000. Eight years and three more albums later, they’ve evolved into the penultimate in Irish folk/punk, if such a genre exists. Hell, it may as well, and their latest record, Float, is one of the greatest to date.
