The Other Boleyn Girl | Film Review

Long Live the Queen

Justin Chadwick’s adaptation of Phillipa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl is remarkably beautiful. The sets are spot on for the period, the costumes regal and breathtaking. Not a single member of the cast reminds us of a bad weekend at the renaissance fair. This is a consummate period drama, retelling the story of Anne Boleyn from a more familial perspective, but it still falls flat.

Kenneth Holm and his wife Dana pick the Oscars!!

Hooray! It's Oscar time once again, and I say to hell with that "Academy Award" crap. It's the Oscars, baby!             Let’s get something straight before we start digging into Vantage Point, the directorial debut of Pete Travis: it is a story told from eight different points of view. It says so in every trailer and on every poster, so when the film flashes back to the beginning and you see Dennis Quaid again, don’t get frustrated or make bad Groundhog Day jokes. That out of the way, let’s talk about this interesting take on the “terrorists attack an anti-terror summit” yarn.

Persepolis | Film Review

Au Rêve de L’Iran

Marjane Satrapi was but a young girl when revolutionaries in Iran overthrew the Shah and began a period of unrest still felt in the nation today. Persepolis is Ms. Satrapi’s personal story, first presented to the world as a graphic novel, and now as an Academy Award nominated film. The film is now making its way to suburban theaters thanks to the awards buzz, but may struggle to find an audience despite that.
